With warmer weather comes grilling season. Outdoor gatherings are a great way to bring the family together and enjoy nice weather, catch up, and eat good food. If you are not cautious, though, a grilling accident can ruin the day. Make sure you’re ready for the season with these grilling safety tips.

1. Keep Your Grill Clean

Remnants of last year’s cookouts may still be on the grill. Though it’s tedious work to clean it out, keeping the grill clean is important for safety. Fats and grease from foods can ignite, causing dangerous flare-ups or even a full-blown fire. It’s best to clean your grill after each use and when it’s not been used for a while.

2. Grilling Safety Means Keeping a Watch Over Pets & Children

It’s hard to keep an excited puppy or curious child away from the grill, but for their safety, it’s important to do so. Teach children to stay at least 10 feet away from the grill. Encourage them to play on the other side of the yard while the food is being prepared. Always have an adult around to make sure pets and kids are being supervised.

3. Don’t Leave Your Grill Unattended

You may only need one ingredient from inside your kitchen, but the second you’re gone could be the moment something goes wrong. Ask someone to bring the items you need out to the grilling area or have another adult watch the grill. By always keeping an eye on the cooking space, you’ll help prevent dangerous situations.

4. Have Appropriate Tools for Grilling Safety

For safety, the cook should always use the proper tools to handle food on an outdoor grill; ordinary kitchenware isn’t designed for use on the grill. Grilling implements have longer handles than standard kitchen utensils. Wear an apron to protect your clothing and keep long hair tied back.

5. Grill Away from Trees

Before lighting the grill, make sure it is not near trees or bushes. Look for overhanging branches. Don’t grill under a canopy, awning, or patio umbrella.

Use these safety tips to help you make great memories this summer. Everyone will enjoy time around the grill with friends, family, and good food.
